Priests’ Monthly Gathering

Main

In preparation for the Paschal feasts, and in the presence of Bishop Bruno Varriano, the priests gathered at the Patriarchal Vicariate in Nicosia on the morning of Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

The meeting began with the praying of the Liturgy of the Hours, followed by a spiritual reflection delivered by Fr. Renato Russo, OFM, of the Seraphic Province of Assisi, Italy. In his meditation, he highlighted the significance and symbolism of fasting, referring to the episode of the serpents in the Book of Numbers, where the Israelites were bitten in the desert. He explained how the bronze serpent made by Moses became a symbol of healing and salvation, prefiguring spiritual salvation in Jesus Christ and pointing to the meaning of faith and redemption. He further emphasized that Sacred Scripture, in its entirety, is oriented toward Christ as the source of eternal life, healing, and salvation from sin and death.

During the meeting, Bishop Varriano presented several key points:

  1. Establishment of a Diocesan Choir: His Excellency announced his intention to establish a diocesan choir for the Latin Church, dedicated to preparing major liturgical celebrations and events, while also supporting and training parish choirs, especially musicians and choir leaders. This initiative aims to encourage youth involvement, develop musical talents, and attract new members to serve the Church. The project has been entrusted to Sr. Antonia Piripitsi, Provincial Superiorof the Franciscan Sisters in Limassol, together with Joseph, who has extensive experience in this field. Monthly meetings will bring together participants from all parishes for joint training. The initiative seeks to foster continuity and collaboration among priests, religious, and musicians, while preserving the rich musical heritage of the Catholic Church.
  2. Formation of a Diocesan Council: His Excellency also announced efforts to establish a diocesan council composed of priests, religious sisters, and representatives from all parishes. The aim is to listen to the needs of the faithful, strengthen their sense of belonging, and encourage active participation in the life of the Church. Future steps will include determining the appropriate time to launch the council, defining selection criteria for parish representatives, preparing surveys to gather feedback, and developing a pastoral plan extending over one to three years. The council will also assess strengths and challenges within each parish, propose practical solutions, and create opportunities for the faithful to serve according to their gifts and abilities.
  3. Pastoral Care for Youth: Bishop Varriano stressed the importance of personal pastoral care for young people, given their vital role in the future of the Church. Fr. Theodorus Herdistyan, OFM, Sr. Bed-Guerda Noël, and Fr. Carlos are working on a program to assess the current situation of youth in Cyprus and to strengthen their sense of belonging, particularly among those aged 16–17, ensuring their continued engagement in the Church.
  4. Acknowledgment and Welcome At the conclusion of the meeting, His Excellency expressed gratitude to Sr. Ramona, Superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph, who has completed three years of service in Cyprus and will begin a new mission in Romania. He also warmly welcomed the new Superior, Sr. Marilena Argentieri.

The meeting concluded with a lunch.
